In the frozen sourthern lands where few humans dare to venture, hundreds of thousands of penguins live and prosper. These flightless birds are well adapted to the Antarctic environment. The wings work well as paddles, helping the penguin go after the fish and shell fish that make up its diet. Penguins' feathers are small and hard, almost like scales, and these protect the birds from the vicious cold of the ocean and the winter storms. Penguins have few natural enemies -- only the leopard seal, McCormick's skua -- and man.
