A Dinner Gown of 1846 "Maria" Smithsonian Historical Doll.  One of four dolls in this series that we have on our web site.

The dolls dinner gown depicts that which belonged to Mrs. T.B. Meyers.  It was worn to a dinner party during the presidency of James K. Polk.

The doll wears a chemise,  pantalets and a petticoat of batiste.  Her elegant dress of gray watered polysilk shows intricate sleeve detainoing and the fashionalbe bell shaped skirt of the 1840's and '50s.   Brunette hair trimmed with bandeau of artificial spring flowers.  Painted eyes.  Her flat-soled, white silk shoes are sculpted and painted, and she wears white scuplted gloves.

These dolls are very educational as well as very well made period dolls.  Extensive booklet on history of the 1840 period dress is also included. Great gift item.

This doll is one of four issued in observance of the 150th Anniversary of the Smithsonian Institution.  Each doll has been individually created by a Richmond, Virginia sculptor to represent ladies wearing replicas of historic gowns in the collection of the National Museum of American History.  Under the supervision of Museum curators, recreations of the full sized dresses have been painstakingly designed and made in Richmond by the United State Historical Society.  Each doll is beautifully packaged and is accompanied by a booklet describing the fashion of her time, a hang-tag and a stand.
